GPS Navigation System
GPS technology dates back to the time when first ever satellite was launched in the sky in 1979. The era of global positioning started then. At first it was used for military purposes then gradually its navigation powers took it to the hands of common men.
Now they are being used in cars, airplanes and ships for navigation purposes. However the structure and working is different for car and other navigation devices. The common readings for all GPS devices are the latitude, longitude and altitude of the current location.
However there have been navigation systems which were not based on GPS technology. For example, in 1983 Honda introduced a navigation systems based on accelerometer. The Pioneer was first to use GPS technology for navigation purposes.
But still it did not become very common. In 1995 Magellan introduced GPS devices. That was the time when GPS technology started to gain popularity. Then Palm top devices came which led the GPS to a boom.
GPS devices consult a database map to get the location. They get the location of streets and roads by converting the map coordinates to map locations. These coordinates show you the location on screens or use voice system to tell you the information.
GPS systems are being successfully used in shipment of goods. Many transport companies have installed GPS systems in their delivery vehicles. By using this technology it is easy to get the location of a vehicle and to calculate the time required to reach to the destination from the current position.
Nowadays there are many companies which are manufacturing GPS enabled devices. HP’s iPAQ 914 and HP 614 are one of the most popular devices of today. They have the every essential of GPS systems in them. You can truly rely on the functioning of these devices.
